Negros Oriental General Information: Climate
Negros Oriental is considered to be outside the "Typhoon Belt" of the Philippines. This means it enjoys all-around good weather. Rainfall is usually light, although there can be a few heavy rains per year, and when this happens, it gives the natives something to talk about for months on end.
According to Boloney Perdices, a long time resident of Dumaguete City, islanders consider the rain to be of two types: "Rain from God," the kind that makes the crops and other planrs and flowes grow, and "Rain from the Devil" the kind that destroys.
December to January usually encounters the "Amihan," which the natives call "dirty Northeastern winds" while the "Habagat" or southwestern wind is experienced in July and August. This information is especially important in terms of fishing and diving.
One diver writes: "So please, folks, my rule of thumb is, if you see whitecaps on the water in the site where you are supposed to dive, then ABORT the dive. If the waves are so big that getting to the dive site starts making you nauseous, than that is your cue that the surface And according to the folks running the Bais Bay Cruises, the dolphins and whales swim the waters of Tannon Strait all year round, it's just that when the waves are high visitors cannot see them. This is why their dolphin watch operations always start in March every year and end in October.
Wet & Dry Seasons
The whole eastern part of the province falls under the third type of climate which is characterized by not very pronounced maximum rainfall with a short dry season from one to two months.
The western half falls under the the first type, characterized by a distinct wet and dry season. A dry month is one wherein rainfall is less than two inches.
Rainfall Distribution
Average monthly rainfall distribution ranges from 12.6 millimeters to 169.7 millimeters with a minimum of six (6) rainy days and a maximum of 17 rainy days.
The month of April usually has the lowest for the year while October sees the most rainfall
Temperature Range
The temperature for the entire province of Negros Oriental ranges from between 22.8ºC and 23.7ºC. Maximum temperatures can reach 34.5ºC in the month of July. The lowerst temperatures were recorded in the month of April ar 20ºC.
